Good AI work takes more than technology.

It takes a clear commercial direction, honest communication and strong foundations. Our team brings those disciplines together so every idea can be considered from more than one angle.

How Mārama began

Two journeys. One clear idea.

Jasper came from the technology side: building software, working with automation and AI, and helping businesses turn ideas into systems they could use. Joe came from the business side: building organisations, growing teams and helping good ideas find their purpose and direction.

As they worked together, they kept seeing the same gap. AI was moving quickly, and New Zealand businesses could see the potential. But between the new tools, models and promises, it was hard to tell where AI actually belonged in a business, what was worth investing in or how to begin without adding more complexity.

The shared conclusion
What businesses needed most was clarity.

Clarity about where AI could genuinely help, how it would affect people and everyday work, and what it would take to turn an idea into something useful. That thinking became Mārama AI. The name Mārama speaks to understanding, clarity and illumination.

Today, that can mean helping a team use AI well, redesigning a workflow, automating a process, improving AI visibility or building something new. Whatever the work, Jasper and Joe start with the business and the people in it, then use AI where it can create real value.

The paths behind it

The people who started the conversation.

Jasper Hallamore

Jasper’s journey into AI started with making things. With a background in no-code development, software and technology, he spent years creating digital products and turning ideas into working systems.

That work drew him into automation and AI, and later into CTO and technical leadership roles. But working inside New Zealand businesses in construction, accounting and professional services changed how he saw the opportunity. It was rarely just about choosing a better tool. It was about understanding how a business worked, noticing where people lost time and building something that fitted the way the team actually operated.

That is why Jasper focuses on AI transformation: bringing people, processes and technology together, then doing the hands-on work to make change useful. Mārama AI is the next step in that journey, helping businesses move from wondering what AI could mean for them to putting it to work.

Joe Youssef

Joe’s story has always been about building organisations and helping good ideas grow into something meaningful. Over more than 25 years, he has worked across large organisations, businesses, charities, social enterprises and purpose-driven ventures.

Along the way, he has established and grown organisations, raised investment, bought and sold businesses, built teams and helped ventures reach national and international scale. He has also seen that a good product or strategy only goes so far without a clear purpose, a healthy culture and people who understand why their work matters. That belief shaped his founding of Tautoko Kaupapa and his work with organisations focused on business, community and social impact.

When AI began opening new possibilities, Joe recognised a familiar challenge: plenty of potential, but a need for direction and practical execution. At Mārama AI, he helps keep the conversation grounded in what a business is trying to achieve and how AI can support meaningful, sustainable growth.

Joe Youssef

Joe has spent more than 25 years establishing, growing and working alongside New Zealand businesses and organisations across a wide range of industries. He has built technology ventures, scaled teams, raised investment and helped organisations turn ideas into practical outcomes.

He saw that many Kiwi businesses could see AI’s potential but were unsure where it would add value or how to implement it well. That opportunity led to Mārama AI: helping businesses find practical uses for AI and build systems that create real business value.
